Lotus, the iconic British carmaker, is redefining itself as a high-tech luxury electric vehicle (EV) brand. At Amazon’s AWS re:Invent event last week, Lotus announced that its next generation of EVs will integrate advanced technology powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

This partnership aligns with Lotus’ Vision80 Strategy, which aims to transform the brand into a cutting-edge EV manufacturer by 2028. By leveraging AWS, Lotus plans to incorporate the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, generative AI, and connected car features such as autonomous driving, infotainment, and fast charging into its vehicles.

Lotus, now owned by Chinese automotive giant Geely, has gradually expanded its EV offerings. Its current lineup includes the Eletre Carbon SUV (starting at $229,900), the hyper-exclusive Evija hypercar priced at $2.3 million, and the upcoming 2025 Emeya Hyper-GT sedan. Earlier this year, Lotus unveiled its Theory 1 EV concept performance car, showcasing its innovative approach to design and technology.

Lotus is also bidding farewell to internal combustion engines with the Emira sports car, introduced in 2021, which will feature a hybrid variant priced at $99,900.

AWS will play a central role in powering key aspects of Lotus’ connected EV technology: Lotus’ self-driving software, ROBO, will utilize AWS for autonomous highway driving, self-parking, real-time traffic data, and advanced mapping. Fleet management capabilities will be supported by ROBO Galaxy. Lotus Connect, running on AWS, will offer features such as remote control, digital keys, geofencing, status monitoring, and vehicle tracking for maintenance, roadside assistance, and theft recovery. Integration with Apple Wallet will enable iPhone and Apple Watch users to access the Lotus Digital Key. AWS will enhance analytics and online services, including a 3D car configurator for customizing trims, colors, and accessories during the online car shopping experience.
Lotus’ Future in the EV Market
The collaboration between Lotus and AWS underscores the increasing reliance on cloud services to power connected vehicles. With more than 90% of cars sold in the U.S. since 2020 being connected cars, this technology has become a standard in the automotive industry, especially for electric vehicles.
