BEIJING (Azat TV) – Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery and a groundbreaking 1,500-kilowatt Flash Charging network on March 5, 2026, in Shenzhen. This significant technological leap aims to reinvigorate the company’s momentum in a fiercely competitive domestic market, following a steep sales slump that saw BYD lose its top position to rival Geely earlier this year.

The launch represents BYD’s most substantial battery upgrade in six years and is a direct response to diminishing technological leadership and a decline in domestic sales that began in the second half of 2025. BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu highlighted the innovations as crucial for regaining market share and aligning with Beijing’s push for a value-driven auto market that prioritizes distinctive, high-quality products.

Next-Generation Blade Battery Capabilities

The new second-generation Blade Battery introduces substantial improvements in performance and efficiency. It boasts a higher energy density, now ranging from 190 to 210 Wh/kg, marking an approximately 40% increase over its predecessor. This material upgrade, utilizing a lithium manganese iron phosphate chemistry system, allows vehicles equipped with the battery to achieve a China Light Duty Test Cycle (CLTC) range of over 1,000 kilometers (approximately 621 miles) on a full charge for premium models like the Denza Z9GT and luxury Yangwang U7, according to BYD.

A critical advancement is the battery’s rapid charging capability, even in extreme cold. The company confirmed that the new Blade Battery can charge from 20% to 97% in under 12 minutes, even at minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit). When paired with the new Flash Chargers, a vehicle can achieve a 10-70% charge in just five minutes and reach 97% in around nine minutes. This performance significantly enhances the driving experience in low temperatures and addresses a common concern for EV owners. BYD also stated that the new batteries have passed safety tests exceeding China’s latest national standards.

Revolutionizing BYD’s Charging Speeds

Complementing the advanced battery technology, BYD introduced its new ‘Flash Charging’ stations, capable of delivering a staggering 1,500 kilowatts (1.5 megawatts) of peak charging power. These stations operate with 1,500 amps of current and a 1,000-volt base architecture, making them three times faster than Tesla’s latest V4 Superchargers and significantly more powerful than most new EV chargers in the U.S., which typically output 250-400 kW, InsideEVs reported.

The design of these Flash Charging stations mimics traditional gas stations, featuring T-shaped towers and ‘zero-gravity’ charging guns for ease of use. They also incorporate plug-and-charge functionality, streamlining the charging process. BYD demonstrated this speed by charging a Denza Z9 GT from 9% to 1,008 kilometers (626 miles) CLTC range in just 9 minutes and 51 seconds. While CLTC estimates are generally more optimistic than EPA figures, this translates to roughly 400 miles of driving range added in under 10 minutes, making EV charging nearly as quick as refueling a gasoline car.

BYD is aggressively deploying this new infrastructure, having already constructed over 4,000 Flash Charging stations in China. The company plans to expand this network to 20,000 stations by the end of 2026, including 2,000 along highways. Furthermore, BYD intends to roll out these Flash chargers to Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia Pacific region. To manage the immense power output and prevent strain on existing grids, BYD will install energy storage batteries at these sites for better load distribution and power management.

BYD’s Strategy to Reclaim EV Market Leadership

The unveiling of the new Blade Battery and Flash Charging technology comes at a critical juncture for BYD. Despite previous efforts in early 2025, including advanced assisted-driving features on affordable models and a five-minute super-charging system, the company failed to stem a domestic sales slide. Volumes fell further in January and February 2026, leading to BYD being overtaken by local competitor Geely. The expiration of China’s purchase tax exemption on EVs also benefited legacy automakers like Volkswagen, which regained its top-selling position in China in January.

BYD’s chairman Wang Chuanfu launched more than 10 models equipped with the new Blade Batteries across all brands, with prices ranging from 155,000 yuan ($22,463) for its Song Ultra EV to 1.3 million yuan for the flagship Yangwang U8L. While analysts acknowledged the significant technological advancements, some expressed caution, noting that the new vehicle lineup might not be enough to boost sales if consumers continue to prioritize more affordable options in the value-driven Chinese EV market, Reuters reported.

The strategic deployment of these advanced battery and charging technologies underscores BYD’s determination to reassert its dominance in the global electric vehicle sector. By addressing key consumer pain points like charging speed and range anxiety, especially in challenging cold weather conditions, BYD aims to differentiate its offerings and regain the technological edge crucial for sustained growth in an increasingly competitive landscape.
