Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guéhi has avoided disciplinary action from the English Football Association (FA) despite wearing a rainbow captain’s armband with the phrase “I love Jesus” written on it during his team’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.

While the FA prohibits any religious or political messages on clothing under Rule A4 of its kit and advertising regulations, neither Guéhi nor his club will face formal consequences. The FA reminded both parties of their responsibilities regarding the rules but chose not to escalate the matter, thereby avoiding potential fines or suspensions.

The rainbow armbands, distributed as part of the Premier League’s support for Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion, were mandated for all team captains. The campaign emphasizes inclusivity and celebrates diversity in football.

Guéhi’s decision to add a personal religious message raised questions, particularly as FA rules explicitly forbid such statements. However, the association has chosen to handle the matter lightly, likely acknowledging the complexity of balancing personal beliefs with inclusivity initiatives.

Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy also made headlines by opting out of wearing the rainbow armband altogether. As a practising Muslim, Morsy chose the standard black captain’s armband instead. The FA respected this decision, stating that it fell within personal and club discretion and did not breach kit regulations. Ipswich Town reaffirmed their commitment to inclusivity while supporting Morsy’s right to express his faith-based choice.
