Mark Hughes, the former Wales international and renowned football manager, has announced the sudden and unexpected death of his son, Alex Hughes, at the age of 38. The news was confirmed in a statement issued via the League Managers Association (LMA) on June 20, 2026.
In a heartfelt tribute, Mark Hughes and his wife, Jill, expressed their devastation, stating they are “totally heartbroken” by the loss. The family remembered Alex as a “wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children, Sebastian and Leonardo.”
Alex Hughes had established a significant career within football administration and recruitment. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Player Recruitment Lead at League Two club Grimsby Town. Prior to this role, he held positions with several clubs, including AFC Fylde, Morecambe, Fulham, and Manchester City. His professional journey began as a match analyst at Blackburn Rovers after a brief playing career in Wales.
