President Donald Trump introduced a proposal on Saturday via Truth Social to rename U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to the National Immigration and Customs Enforcement (NICE). The President stated that the change is intended to “discombobulate” media organizations he describes as “unpatriotic,” arguing that journalists would struggle to report negatively on an agency with the acronym “NICE.”
According to Local 10, the proposal comes at a time when the administration is navigating significant international challenges, including threats to impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz if a final deal with Iran is not reached within 60 days. The focus on social media engagement has drawn mixed reactions, with critics pointing to the administration’s priorities during a period of potential global instability.
ICE has recently been the subject of intense scrutiny following the fatal shootings of two 37-year-old U.S. citizens in Minneapolis. Human rights organizations have also continued to condemn the agency’s detention practices and deportation policies. While Trump noted that the name change might be viewed as “prestigious,” he acknowledged that Tom Homan indicated internal staff may prefer the current branding.
