EDMONTON (Azat TV) – The Edmonton Oilers announced on Friday the signing of 21-year-old defenseman Tomas Cibulka to a two-year entry-level contract. The deal, which secures the Czech blueliner for the organization, is set to commence with the 2026-27 NHL season.
Transitioning from Czechia to the NHL
Cibulka joins the Oilers following a productive two-season stint with HC Motor Ceske Budejovice in Czechia’s top professional league. During his time in his hometown, the six-foot, 176-pound defender demonstrated consistent offensive production from the back end, recording 42 points—comprised of 13 goals and 29 assists—across 90 regular-season appearances. His impact was further noted during postseason play, where he added 10 points in 13 games.
Building on North American Experience
While his recent experience is rooted in European professional hockey, Cibulka is already well-acquainted with the North American style of play. From 2021 to 2024, he spent three seasons in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). During his junior tenure with the Val-d’Or Foreurs and the Cape Breton Eagles, he logged 191 games and accumulated 102 points. This familiarity with the ice surface and pace of the North American game is expected to aid his transition into the Oilers’ organizational pipeline.
International Pedigree and Pipeline Development
Beyond his club success, Cibulka has experience on the international stage, having represented Czechia at the 2024 World Junior Championships. His performance in that tournament, where he notched two goals in seven games, was instrumental in helping his nation secure a bronze medal. By signing Cibulka, the Oilers are looking to bolster their defensive depth with a player who has navigated both the high-pressure environment of top-tier European hockey and the developmental grind of the Canadian major junior system.
The acquisition of Cibulka signals a strategic focus on integrating versatile, battle-tested prospects into the Oilers’ defensive core, leveraging his proven ability to produce offensively while adapting to diverse tactical environments across both continents.
