OpenAI has rolled out a new feature called “Projects” in ChatGPT, aimed at improving the organization and management of user interactions with the AI. This functionality allows users to consolidate related chats, files, and custom instructions into a single workspace, enhancing efficiency and accessibility for ongoing tasks and projects.
Key Features of the “Projects” Update
- Workspace Organization: Users can create dedicated projects by clicking the plus icon in the ChatGPT sidebar. Each project can be named, assigned a color for easy identification, and enriched with files or custom instructions to provide context for related conversations.
- Chat Management: Existing chats can be dragged and dropped into a project, or new chats can be initiated directly within the workspace. Additionally, users can search through their chat history to find and organize older conversations under the appropriate project.
- File Integration: The feature supports file uploads within projects, making it an excellent tool for coding tasks, team collaborations, or any task requiring reference materials.
- Custom Instructions: Users can add specific instructions to a project, enabling ChatGPT to retain relevant context and deliver more focused assistance.
Availability and Expansion Plans
The “Projects” feature is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users on platforms such as chatgpt.com, the desktop app for Windows, and mobile or macOS applications. OpenAI plans to roll out this feature to Enterprise and Education (Edu) accounts in January 2025 and eventually make it accessible to free-tier users.
