In a week marked by high-stakes diplomacy, the spotlight turned to a complex triangular relationship between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and U.S. President Donald Trump. Against the backdrop of a grinding war in Ukraine, Trump has taken on an active role in mediating talks, even as skepticism looms over the feasibility of a peace agreement.

Trump Pushes for a Summit

On August 18, President Trump hosted Zelenskyy at the White House alongside key European leaders in what was described as a “significant step” toward peace. During the discussions, Trump paused to call Putin, reportedly proposing a trilateral summit involving himself, Zelenskyy, and Putin. “I told them that we’re going to set up a meeting with President Zelenskyy, and you and he will meet, and then after that meeting, if everything works out okay, I’ll meet and we’ll wrap it up,” Trump revealed during a Fox News interview, as reported by ABC News.

While Trump expressed optimism, he also underscored the challenges ahead. “I hope President Putin is going to be good, and if he’s not, it’s going to be a rough situation,” he said. The U.S. president also hinted at the need for Zelenskyy to show “flexibility,” a comment that sparked criticism from some quarters.

Moscow’s Reluctance and European Efforts

The Kremlin, however, has been non-committal. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed that Moscow is not ready to commit to a Putin-Zelenskyy meeting but did not completely rule it out. According to Politico, an official close to the Russian leadership dismissed the idea of a summit, stating, “Everyone immediately dismissed it.” This tepid response has added another layer of complexity to the already fraught peace process.

Meanwhile, European leaders have stepped up their support for Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced plans for a 19th sanctions package against Russia, expected to be unveiled in early September. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that 30 nations, including Japan, are working on a framework to provide security guarantees to Ukraine post-conflict. “The EU will also continue targeting Russia’s war economy,” remarked European Council President António Costa, emphasizing the bloc’s commitment to pressuring Moscow.

Security Guarantees and U.S. Stance

One of the key sticking points in the discussions revolves around security guarantees for Ukraine. Trump made it clear that the U.S. would not deploy ground troops to Ukraine. “You have my assurance, and I’m president,” he told Fox News. However, the White House remains open to other forms of support, including military aid and training programs.

According to The Guardian, Trump’s administration has faced criticism for a slowdown in U.S. aid to Ukraine. While the U.S. remains the largest individual contributor to Ukraine’s defense, its share of total aid has dropped from 52% in 2024 to 47% by mid-2025, with European nations stepping in to fill the gap. This shift reflects a broader strategy to encourage Europe to take the lead in securing Ukraine’s future.

Ukrainian Perspective and Battlefield Realities

For Ukraine, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Zelenskyy described the White House talks as a “significant step” but reiterated that Ukraine would not compromise on its territorial integrity. “Europe must have a hand in developing security guarantees,” he insisted, as reported by CNN. On the battlefield, however, the situation remains dire. Ukrainian forces recently struck two Russian ammunition depots in the occupied Luhansk region, signaling that active conflict is far from over.

Ukrainian citizens, meanwhile, remain skeptical. In an interview with NBC News, a Kharkiv resident remarked, “All the meetings that are happening don’t make me feel like something is changing. Bombs are still arriving.” This sentiment underscores the disconnect between diplomatic efforts and the harsh realities on the ground.

Trump vs Putin

As diplomatic momentum builds, the road to peace remains riddled with obstacles. Trump’s proposed trilateral meeting, if it materializes, could mark a turning point. However, with Moscow’s reluctance, Europe’s cautious optimism, and Ukraine’s firm stance on territorial sovereignty, the outcome is far from certain.

Only time will tell whether these high-stakes discussions can pave the way for a lasting peace, or if they will become another chapter in the protracted saga of the Ukraine conflict.
