Redeemer Baptist School in North Parramatta, Sydney, is facing intense scrutiny following a six-month investigation by The Sydney Morning Herald. Former students and staff have leveled serious allegations against the institution, describing a culture of authoritarian control, forced labor, and the monitoring of students’ private lives.

According to the report, former students claim they were subjected to strict rules, including mandatory manual labor, restricted personal autonomy, and interference in their university and career choices. The school, which is operated by the Redeemer Baptist Church, has consistently rejected these claims. In a statement, the school asserted that its practices are not unlawful or coercive, characterizing the accusations as unfamiliar but not abusive.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) has confirmed it is investigating the school regarding registration compliance and funding obligations. Federal Education Minister Jason Clare and NSW Education Minister Prue Car have both described the reports as deeply concerning, with Clare confirming his department is reviewing the matter.

For years, the school has operated under the leadership of families linked to the founding members of the church. Former students allege that the institution exercised extreme control over their daily lives, including dictating clothing and monitoring communication with the outside world. The school maintains that students retain personal agency and that volunteer work is encouraged rather than forced.
