DUBLIN (Azat TV) – Riad Bouchaker, the man accused of the attempted murder of three children and a care worker during a 2023 incident in Parnell Square, has been declared fit to stand trial. Mr Justice Tony Hunt issued the ruling at the Central Criminal Court on Friday, March 27, following a comprehensive review of medical and psychiatric evidence, clearing the way for proceedings to commence this summer.
Judicial Ruling on Fitness for Trial
The determination follows months of legal scrutiny regarding Bouchaker’s ability to participate in his own defense. While both prosecution and defense psychiatrists acknowledged that the 52-year-old suffers from a neurocognitive disorder linked to previous medical history, Mr Justice Hunt concluded that these limitations do not render the accused unfit for trial. The judge emphasized that while the legal process will require reasonable accommodations to ensure fairness, the defendant possesses sufficient understanding of the charges and the capacity to provide instructions to his legal team.
During the hearing, the court heard that the trial is scheduled to begin on June 8 and is expected to span approximately two weeks. The judge noted that the matter will remain under continuous review as the trial progresses to ensure the proceedings remain equitable.

Bouchaker faces multiple serious charges, including the attempted murder of two girls and one boy, as well as assault causing serious harm to a care worker. He is also charged with the possession and production of a 36cm kitchen knife. The November 2023 attack left several victims in critical condition and triggered significant civil unrest in the Irish capital, resulting in widespread property damage and injuries to law enforcement personnel.
