Sheetz Inc. has been named to the prestigious Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For list for the 11th consecutive year, reaching its highest-ever ranking at number 32. This recognition, announced April 2, 2026, underscores the Altoona-based convenience retailer’s sustained focus on employee satisfaction as it executes a significant expansion strategy across the United States.
Workplace Culture as an Expansion Catalyst
The company’s consistent placement on the list—the only convenience retailer to achieve this status for nine straight years—is driven by data from the Great Place To Work Trust Index survey. According to internal reports, 90% of Sheetz employees identify the company as a great place to work, significantly outpacing the 57% average for typical U.S.-based firms. CEO and President Travis Sheetz attributed this success to the company’s long-standing identity as a family-owned business that prioritizes competitive benefits, including tuition reimbursement and employee stock ownership.
This corporate culture is being put to the test as the brand scales its footprint. In southeast Michigan, the company is in the final stages of a rollout plan that includes 50 to 60 new locations, with seven sites designated for Macomb County. Each new store is expected to generate at least 30 jobs, with the company aiming to fill over 400 positions in the region. Analysts suggest that the high workplace ranking serves as a vital recruitment tool in these competitive labor markets.
Integrating Community and Commerce
Beyond its internal growth, the company is recalibrating its development strategy to emphasize community integration. In Fraser, Michigan, the company is nearing completion of an $8 million fuel and convenience project that incorporates the preserved facade of the historic State Bank of Fraser. The project includes a 3,000-square-foot public park, a pedestrian plaza, and a $50,000 contribution to local road improvements. Public affairs manager Nick Ruffner stated that the decision to preserve local heritage while building modern infrastructure is a deliberate effort to align corporate growth with neighborhood expectations.
Expanding Social Impact Partnerships
The company is also broadening its community engagement through a new sports partnership. Sheetz has teamed up with the Pittsburgh Pirates to launch the “Home Runz for Hunger” program. For every home run hit by the Pirates at PNC Park this season, the retailer will donate $100 to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Each donation is estimated to provide 300 meals to those in need, with a physical “Sheetz Shotz” counter installed in right field to track the impact throughout the season.
The confluence of a high-tier employer ranking and aggressive physical expansion suggests that Sheetz is attempting to leverage its reputation as a ‘best-in-class’ workplace to mitigate the common local friction associated with rapid retail development, effectively using its brand equity to win over municipal stakeholders and potential employees simultaneously.
