Strategic Roster Realignment
The Wests Tigers have officially confirmed that Starford To’a will depart the club at the conclusion of the 2026 NRL season. The 25-year-old Tongan international, originally contracted through 2028, was granted an early release to sign a two-year deal with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
Wests Tigers NRL Head Coach Benji Marshall acknowledged To’a’s contributions, noting that the versatile back has played 66 games for the club since his 2022 debut. Despite the departure, the club confirmed To’a will remain available for the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
Analysis: The Economics of Mid-Contract Releases
To’a’s move highlights a growing trend in the NRL where clubs utilize mutual releases to manage salary cap space and roster turnover. For the Tigers, the move is viewed as a strategic shift, as the club has prioritized younger prospects such as Heamasi Makasini and Faaletino Tavana. The departure provides the Tigers with immediate salary cap relief, allowing for greater flexibility in their long-term recruitment strategy.
Conversely, for the Sea Eagles, the acquisition is a depth-focused play. With Reuben Garrick departing for the Sydney Roosters, coach Kieran Foran requires reliable, experienced cover in the outside backs. To’a, who debuted in 2019, offers the necessary experience to rotate through the backline while supporting established stars like Tom Trbojevic and Tolu Koula.
The move represents a “win-win” scenario. To’a secures a fresh start at Brookvale, while the Tigers continue their roster rebuild, focusing on a younger core contracted through 2030.
