The talks, described as “fruitful” by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, marked a resumption of diplomatic engagement that had been paused due to shifting international priorities. Simultaneously, both Ukraine and Russia unleashed massive drone attacks, with each side reporting hundreds of drones deployed overnight, targeting energy infrastructure and residential areas.
Resumption of Diplomatic Efforts in Florida
The American delegation in Florida included special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and White House senior adviser Josh Gruenbaum. Ukraine was represented by Rustem Umerov, Kyrylo Budanov, David Arakhamia, and Serhiy Kyslytsya. The primary agenda items were sustainable security guarantees for Ukraine and humanitarian initiatives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism about potential prisoner exchanges, stating, “There are signals that further exchanges may be possible, and this would be good news and confirmation that diplomacy is working.” Umerov reported “progress” in aligning positions on unresolved issues with the U.S. side, indicating that a detailed report would follow. These meetings are part of a broader U.S.-backed diplomatic push, though previous rounds have yielded limited progress beyond prisoner swaps and humanitarian coordination, according to Euromaidan Press.
Escalating Drone Warfare Amidst Talks
The diplomatic discussions were overshadowed by an intense exchange of drone strikes between Ukraine and Russia. Russia’s Defense Forces claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 249 Ukrainian drones overnight, characterizing it as one of the largest Ukrainian drone assaults to date, as reported by RFE/RL. Ukraine’s Air Force, in turn, stated that Russian forces launched 251 attack drones during the same period. In Ukraine, Russian drones struck residential areas and port infrastructure in Odessa, injuring at least four people in Kryvyi Rih. Meanwhile, in Russia, a Ukrainian drone attack ignited a fuel tank at the port of Primorsky on the Baltic Sea, a critical oil export hub. Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko reported that over 70 drones were destroyed in the Leningrad region within 24 hours. This marks not the first time Primorsky, which has an export capacity of over 1 million barrels of crude oil per day, has been targeted; it was previously attacked in September 2025, causing temporary halts in oil shipments, as detailed by CNA.
Ukraine’s Drone Capabilities Bolstered
In parallel with the diplomatic and aerial engagements, Ukraine’s drone capabilities are receiving significant support. Germany has funded the production of 15,000 Ukrainian STRILA interceptor drones for its National Guard units. This multi-million-dollar agreement, as reported by the Embassy of Germany in Ukraine, includes training, logistical support, and joint drone development. The STRILA drone, developed by WIY Drones, is designed to counter strike drones, reconnaissance aircraft, and other high-speed aerial targets, reaching speeds of 350–355 km/h and operating effectively with thermal imaging cameras. Upgraded versions feature a GPS-independent SineLink module, enhancing resistance to electronic warfare. The drone’s cost has been reduced to approximately $2,292 per unit, making it accessible for rapid battlefield deployment, according to Euromaidan Press.
