Managing the Rotation
The New York Yankees have officially recalled right-handed pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The move comes as the club navigates a challenging stretch of 16 consecutive games without a scheduled day off, running from June 16 to July 1.
Manager Aaron Boone confirmed the move on Saturday following the team’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. To accommodate Rodriguez on the active roster, the Yankees optioned reliever Jake Bird to Triple-A. The decision allows the team to grant ace Gerrit Cole an additional day of rest, pushing his next start to Monday in Detroit to manage his workload following his recent elbow surgery.
Performance Expectations
Rodriguez, ranked as the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect for 2026 by MLB Pipeline, enters his fourth big-league appearance of the season with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP across 13 innings. While he showed promise in the minors with a 1.27 ERA early this year, his transition to the majors has been marked by control issues, specifically a 14.1-percent walk rate. The coaching staff will be focused on his ability to command the strike zone against the Reds on Sunday.
Team officials indicate that Rodriguez is expected to make this spot start before returning to the minors, as the Yankees explore bullpen depth options including Carlos Lagrange and Yerry de los Santos for the remainder of their demanding schedule.
