While ‘Air Fry’ is marketed as the flagship function, its high-speed fan is designed primarily for robust, heavy items like frozen fries or chicken wings. When applied to delicate foods, this powerful airflow can physically displace ingredients, resulting in uneven cooking or charred exteriors before the center is properly heated.
The ‘Air Fry’ vs. ‘Bake’ Dichotomy
Laboratory testing using a standard grilled cheese sandwich—an ideal proxy for lightweight, delicate food—highlighted the stark difference between functions. On the ‘Air Fry’ setting, the high-velocity fan blew the top slice of bread off the sandwich. Even when manually replaced, the result was unevenly toasted bread and slightly burnt cheese. In contrast, the ‘Bake’ setting provided a more controlled environment.
