Emergency response at Waratah Road
A major police investigation is underway in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, following a harrowing incident that left one child dead and three other people in critical condition. Emergency services were called to Waratah Road in Valley Heights shortly after 1:00 PM on Sunday, September 20, 2026, after receiving reports of a stabbing involving a woman and three children inside a vehicle, according to 7NEWS.
Passersby, including a woman riding a bicycle, discovered the vehicle and the victims inside. Bystanders provided immediate first aid to the wounded while coordinating with emergency services. Despite these efforts, one child was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining two children, both believed to be under the age of five, and a woman in her 40s were treated by paramedics before being transported to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Westmead Hospital. All survivors remain in critical condition following surgical intervention, as reported by the ABC.
Ongoing police investigation
Superintendent John Nelson of the Blue Mountains Police Area Command confirmed that the children’s father has been notified of the tragedy. Authorities stated that the woman involved was not previously known to police. At this stage, investigators are not looking for any other suspects in connection with the attack, but the exact circumstances, motive, and the nature of the relationship between the four victims remain under investigation.
“It is obviously a very difficult weekend, a very distressing weekend for many people,” Superintendent Nelson stated during a press conference. He noted the incident occurred in the context of a wider series of alleged domestic violence-related deaths across New South Wales, where three other women died in separate incidents over the preceding Saturday.
Police have established a crime scene at Waratah Road and are continuing to collect evidence. Authorities are urging anyone who was in the vicinity at the time of the incident or who possesses dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.
