A New Foundation in Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Reds have made a significant investment in their future, reaching an agreement on a seven-year, $105 million contract extension with All-Star pitcher Chase Burns. The deal, reported by Jon Morosi of MLB Network, ties the largest guaranteed contract ever awarded to a pitcher in the franchise’s history.
Burns, selected second overall in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest, has rapidly ascended to become one of the most dominant arms in baseball. Through 18 starts this season, the 23-year-old has posted an 11-1 record with a 2.54 ERA and 118 strikeouts across 102 2/3 innings. This performance has been a rare bright spot for the Reds, who currently hold a 43-52 record.
Financial Strategy and Stakes
The contract, which includes no options or deferrals, runs through 2033 and successfully buys out two years of Burns’ anticipated free agency. For the Reds, this is a calculated risk aimed at solidifying their rotation. By pairing Burns with fellow starter Hunter Greene, who signed a six-year, $53 million extension in 2023, the organization believes it has secured a formidable one-two punch for the remainder of the decade.
While the team has struggled offensively, ranking near the bottom of the National League in run production, Burns’ metrics remain elite. He currently boasts a 31.7% miss rate on swings and has held opponents to a .206 batting average. His signature slider has been particularly effective, generating a 51.2% whiff percentage.
Looking Ahead
Following a brief stint on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury that kept him out of the All-Star game, Burns is confirmed to return to the mound this Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. With this long-term commitment finalized, the Reds are signaling a clear intention to build their competitive window around their young, high-velocity pitching core.
