AI coding startup Cursor officially launched ‘Cursor Start’ on July 28, 2026, a region-specific subscription tier available exclusively to developers in India. Priced at ₹649 per month (approximately $7), the plan is designed to bridge the gap between the company’s free tier and its $20 premium Pro subscription. This move marks a significant shift in Cursor’s commercial strategy, as it seeks to capture India’s rapidly growing developer population—the company’s third-largest market, with over 3 million active users.
Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, stated that the pricing is intended to be commercially sustainable rather than a loss leader. By utilizing Cursor’s in-house models—Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5—the company avoids the higher operational costs associated with third-party frontier systems offered in the Pro tier, such as those from OpenAI and Anthropic.
The Stakes of the SpaceX Acquisition
The India expansion arrives at a pivotal moment, occurring just weeks before the expected closing of Cursor’s $60 billion all-stock acquisition by SpaceX. Announced in mid-June 2026, the deal is slated to finalize in Q3, pending final regulatory approvals. As a wholly owned subsidiary of SpaceX, Cursor is expected to integrate its AI coding capabilities into broader knowledge-work and engineering frameworks.
Market analysts suggest that the integration with SpaceX could provide Cursor with greater infrastructure stability and potentially lower the operational barriers to expanding its localized pricing models to other high-growth markets. While Cursor operates independently until the deal closes, the company is actively building its local footprint in India, with plans for a government affairs office and an expanded sales team across Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
Service Tiers and Operational Limits
Cursor Start includes always-on cloud agents, iOS app access, and support for Model Context Protocol servers. However, the plan excludes several features critical to power users, specifically Bugbot, Auto Mode, Automations, and the Cursor SDK. Furthermore, it does not provide access to the frontier models found in the Pro tier.
To ensure the plan remains exclusive to the Indian market, Cursor has implemented verification measures, including checks intended to deter the use of VPNs. While the company has not disclosed specific numeric usage caps, it confirmed that the plan offers more agent requests than the free tier, positioning it as a tool for developers who require consistent AI assistance without the full cost of the professional suite.
