A Pivot to Multiplayer
Following its recent appearance at the Nintendo Direct, FromSoftware has confirmed that a closed network test for its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, will take place this summer. While specific registration dates and requirements remain undisclosed, the announcement marks a significant development for the title, which was first revealed in April 2025.
The Duskbloods represents a departure from the studio’s traditional single-player-centric formulas. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki has previously described the project as a PvPvE (Player vs. Player vs. Environment) experiment, designed to leverage the studio’s expertise in challenging combat encounters within a competitive eight-player framework.
Institutional Stakes
The success of The Duskbloods is critical for both FromSoftware and Nintendo. For FromSoftware, the game serves as a litmus test for their ability to sustain a multiplayer-first ecosystem—a challenge that follows their recent efforts with Elden Ring: Nightreign. For Nintendo, securing a major exclusive from the studio behind Elden Ring is a key pillar in the Switch 2’s software strategy, intended to attract a core gaming audience.
Industry analysts note that while the game remains without a firm release date, the imminent network test suggests that the project is reaching a mature development stage. With the Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition set for an August 28 release on the same hardware, FromSoftware is clearly positioning itself to dominate the Switch 2’s RPG landscape throughout the latter half of 2026.
