A Late Comeback in Toronto

Germany secured their place in the 2026 World Cup knockout stages on Saturday, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 at BMO Field. The result, confirmed by live match reports from The Athletic, marks Germany’s second consecutive victory in the group stage.

Ivory Coast initially took the lead through midfielder Franck Kessie, who capitalized on a precise cross from Yan Diomande. Despite constant pressure from the German side, Ivorian goalkeeper Fofana maintained the lead for much of the match with a series of critical saves.

Nagelsmann’s Tactical Shift

German manager Julian Nagelsmann turned the tide in the 60th minute with a triple substitution. The tactical adjustment proved decisive, as substitutes Nadiem Amiri and Deniz Undav combined to level the score in the 68th minute. Undav, continuing his remarkable international scoring form, struck again in the seventh minute of stoppage time to seal the win.

The victory serves as a significant boost for Germany, which is now positioned to win Group E. For Ivory Coast, the loss is a difficult setback, though their tournament campaign remains alive pending the final group match against Curaçao.
