Hulu is officially moving forward with a television adaptation of the 1996 cult comedy The Cable Guy. According to reports from Collider, the project aims to modernize the premise for the streaming era, focusing on a man who reactivates his cable subscription only to draw the attention of an obsessive, lonely technician.

The series will feature a reunion between Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr., who previously starred together in New Girl and Let’s Be Cops. Johnson is slated to play the role of the cable technician, originally portrayed by Jim Carrey, while Wayans Jr. will take on the role of the architect, originally played by Matthew Broderick.

The production is being handled by Sony Pictures TV, with writing duties assigned to Rob Rosell (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and the duo of Joe Piarulli and Luan Thomas (Cobra Kai). The creative team plans to pivot away from simple nostalgia, instead exploring the psychological complexities of modern digital isolation and the toxic nature of parasocial relationships in an age where streaming services have replaced traditional cable.

By casting established comedic chemistry and updating the narrative to reflect contemporary media consumption, Hulu seeks to differentiate this reboot from other recent attempts to translate film properties into serialized television.
