Exactly one month after the blockbuster trade that reshaped the NBA landscape, Jaylen Brown was officially introduced as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. During an introductory press conference held at the Francis J. Myers Recreation Center in Philadelphia, the former Celtics star addressed the emotional toll of leaving the franchise where he spent his entire 10-year career.
Brown, who was traded on July 6 in a move that brought 36-year-old Paul George and four future draft picks to Boston, admitted the transition has been difficult. “When I first got traded, I just threw my phone across the room,” Brown told reporters, noting that he is still processing the shift after spending a third of his life in Boston. He expressed gratitude for his tenure with the Celtics, highlighting the 2024 championship as a cornerstone of his professional legacy.
The End of the ‘Jays’ Era
A significant portion of the conversation focused on Brown’s relationship with Jayson Tatum. The duo, drafted in consecutive years (2016 and 2017), served as the core of Boston’s championship-winning team. However, Brown confirmed that the two have not spoken since the trade, despite their shared history. When asked about the current state of their relationship, Brown maintained a stance of professional respect while noting the absence of recent communication. “We won a championship together. So anybody that you win a championship with, you would think that’s what a brotherhood or a lifelong legacy would entail. Obviously, there’s ups and downs in any relationship… but on my end, it’s nothing but respect,” he said.
Institutional Stakes and Future Fit
The trade, which Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens justified as a necessity to manage salary cap constraints and increase “optionality,” has faced scrutiny from fans and analysts. Brown himself expressed previous frustration regarding how the organization handled trade speculation, though he signaled a desire to move forward. “I’m moving on. Maybe one day, we can share the details of how everything transpired,” he added.
Now, Brown joins a reloaded 76ers roster that includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, and recent high-profile acquisition LeBron James. While the talent on paper is significant, Brown cautioned that success is not guaranteed. “I’ve been around a long time—long enough to know that just what you have on paper don’t really mean nothing… if you allow distractions, if you allow the media to get into your locker room, it could be a detriment,” Brown stated. The 76ers are looking to end a championship drought dating back to 1983.
