Jofra Archer has made his return to the England cricket side for the second Test match against New Zealand at The Oval. Archer, who missed the series opener due to Indian Premier League (IPL) commitments, is one of five changes to the England squad.
With regular captain Ben Stokes absent due to disciplinary reasons, Joe Root has stepped in as interim captain. The reshaped England side features three debutants—Jordan Cox, James Rew, and Sonny Baker—and a total of five players with one Test cap or fewer, marking a significant period of transition for the squad.
England opted to bowl first under overcast conditions, with Archer making an immediate impact by claiming the wicket of New Zealand captain Tom Latham shortly before lunch. Matthew Fisher, making his first Test appearance since 2022, also contributed by dismissing Devon Conway. Despite a delayed start due to morning drizzle, the English bowling attack showed promise as they rotated options throughout the opening session.
Root expressed confidence in the squad’s potential, noting the “huge amount of skill and excitement” surrounding the new faces in the team. As the series progresses, the performance of this inexperienced bowling unit, bolstered by the return of key figures like Archer, remains the central focus for England’s tactical development.
