  • Massive Attack and Tom Waits collaborate on protest song.
  • Song targets ICE raids and militarization of police.
  • Proceeds from ‘Boots On The Ground’ benefit civil rights groups.

In a striking collaboration that blends trip-hop with gravelly vocals, Massive Attack and Tom Waits have released “Boots On The Ground,” a politically charged single addressing ICE raids on migrant communities and related human rights concerns. Released April 16, 2026, the track marks the first new material from Massive Attack in a decade and the first from Waits, age 76, since his 2011 album “Bad As Me.” The song’s release underscores the enduring power of music as a form of protest and commentary on contemporary social issues.

A Decade of Silence, A Timely Message

“Boots On The Ground” isn’t just a musical endeavor; it’s a statement. The lyrics directly confront the militarization of police forces and what Massive Attack’s Robert “3D” Del Naja described as the fusion of “state authoritarianism and the militarisation of police forces are fusing again with neo-fascist politics.” The song features additional vocals from Waits’ son, Casey, and opens with heavy breathing, setting a haunting tone for Waits’ distinctive voice and politically charged lyrics. Proceeds from the song will go to the American Civil Liberties Union and the US Immigrant Defense Project, directly supporting organizations that champion civil rights and provide legal assistance to immigrants.

Lyrical Warfare

The lyrics pull no punches, directly criticizing those in power. Lines such as “Now who the hell are these federal pricks? / Hiding in the Senate like a bloated-ass tick” and “Air-conditioned fuckstick loafers / Sittin’ in a room full of army posters” offer a scathing critique of government officials. The song also addresses the human cost of ICE actions, naming individuals who have died in ICE custody or as a result of ICE actions. The accompanying video, created by Massive Attack with work by US photo artist thefinaleye, further amplifies the song’s message by visually depicting events ranging from the murder of George Floyd to the realities of American homelessness.

Eco-Conscious Release

Beyond the song’s message, the release itself reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility. The physical release of “Boots On The Ground” is an exclusive vinyl featuring a B-side called “The Fly” by Tom Waits. Massive Attack partnered with Good Neighbor on an ‘EcoSonic’ pressing manufactured from 100 per cent recycled PET via energy-efficient injection moulding. Recycled, FSC-certified paper stock and recycled polyethylene have been used for the sleeves and outer slipcases respectively, demonstrating a holistic approach to activism.

The collaboration between Massive Attack and Tom Waits arrives at a critical juncture, where artistic expression and political activism increasingly intersect. Del Naja’s recent arrest at a Palestine Action protest in London highlights the personal risks artists are willing to take to advocate for their beliefs. “Boots on the Ground” serves as a reminder of the power of music to challenge injustice and inspire action, blending the unique talents of two iconic artists to create a potent and timely message.
