Clarifying the Pre-order Narrative
Microsoft has publicly pushed back against reports suggesting that Grand Theft Auto VI is significantly underperforming on Xbox platforms compared to the PlayStation 5. The controversy stems from a recent claim by IGN, which suggested, based on affiliate link tracking, that PS5 pre-orders were outpacing Xbox by an 8-to-1 margin. An Xbox spokesperson told Windows Central, “This doesn’t represent pre-order data. We’ve had record orders. People should wait for real data and not clicks on affiliate links.”
The Data Transparency Challenge
The dispute highlights a growing tension regarding industry transparency. Microsoft has largely ceased reporting console sales figures since the Xbox One era, and first-party game performance metrics are rarely shared publicly. Analysts note that while the PS5 has historically outsold the Xbox Series X/S at a ratio of roughly 2-to-1, the affiliate-based claims of an 8-to-1 disparity remain anecdotal and speculative. Experts suggest that without official sales reports from publisher Take-Two Interactive or platform holders, such figures lack the necessary context to determine true market penetration.
Wishlist Trends on Xbox
Despite the debate over pre-order volumes, Grand Theft Auto VI remains the most wishlisted title on the Xbox digital storefront. Microsoft recently updated its store filters to allow for better visibility into upcoming releases. The top of the list includes high-profile titles such as Fable, Metro 2039, and Halo: Campaign Evolved. The inclusion of unexpected titles like Euro Truck Simulator 2, which has surpassed 1 million wishlists across platforms, indicates that player interest remains diverse across the Xbox ecosystem.
