A Strategic Shift in the Heavyweight Division

Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has officially vacated his WBA, IBF, and WBC world titles. The 39-year-old Ukrainian fighter announced the decision on Friday, framing it as a calculated move to clear the path for the next generation of contenders while he prepares for a final career appearance.

“Today is a good day to say that I want to vacate all the belts I currently hold,” Usyk stated via Instagram. “I want to make them available so the guys who want them and are next in line can fight for them.” Despite relinquishing the straps, Usyk emphasized that he is not retiring from the sport, confirming that he is planning one “last dance” to conclude his storied career.

Legacy and the Path Forward

Usyk’s sporting director, Sergey Lapin, provided additional context regarding the decision. In comments to ESPN, Lapin noted that the move was designed with the broader health of the heavyweight division in mind. By vacating the titles, Usyk effectively clears the way for former champion Anthony Joshua to compete for and potentially reunify the belts. Usyk will, however, retain his Ring Magazine title, which is widely recognized as the lineal championship in boxing circles.

The decision follows a challenging outing last month against kickboxer Rico Verhoeven, a bout that tested the veteran champion. While Usyk remains undefeated (25-0, 16 KOs) and stands as the first male boxer to become a three-time undisputed champion in the four-belt era, his team suggests that the final chapter of his legacy will be written in the United States. While no opponent has been named for his final outing, the boxing world is already speculating on potential marquee matchups for the Ukrainian icon.
