On The Border Mexican Grill and Cantina has officially closed all company-owned locations nationwide, marking a significant contraction for the casual dining brand. The announcement, posted to the company’s website, confirms that the decision follows a challenging period of financial instability, including a 2025 bankruptcy filing.
Houston-based Pappas Restaurants, which acquired the chain in May 2025, had attempted to revitalize the brand through a sweeping menu overhaul and operational enhancements. Despite these efforts, the company opted to shutter its corporate sites just weeks after publicizing the improvements. Pappas Restaurants stated that they are currently “evaluating the future of the On The Border brand” and exploring various strategic options for the remaining assets.
While corporate locations are closing, the impact on the brand is not universal. According to reports from USA Today and other outlets, independently owned franchise locations in states including California, Florida, Nevada, and South Dakota, as well as international sites in South Korea, will continue to operate as usual.
