At the heart of its success is 16-year-old Warrington-born actor Owen Cooper, whose portrayal of Jamie Miller opposite Stephen Graham earned him global acclaim and set a new standard for young acting talent.
Director Philip Barantini, speaking at a recent live event at Liverpool’s Epstein Theatre, revealed that the search for the actor to play Jamie was exhaustive, involving the review of approximately 500 audition tapes. The casting team prioritized Jamie’s role because the character’s specific regional accent would dictate the casting of the entire Miller family, including Stephen Graham as the father, Eddie.

Cooper’s path to the role was defined by an unorthodox level of preparation. During the casting process, while other actors arrived with scripts in hand, Cooper walked into the room having memorized every line. Barantini recalled his initial confusion, questioning if the then-14-year-old had forgotten his script, only to realize that Cooper had internalized the material completely.
“He was just completely off book,” Barantini noted. “That was another moment when we realized how seriously he had taken it.” Cooper himself credited his success to a mix of confidence and a desire to connect with the material. Despite feeling nervous after observing other actors leaving the auditions, he focused on remaining authentic, a trait that Barantini identified as the defining factor in his selection.
