Pierre Engvall, the 6-foot-6 forward for the New York Islanders, made his highly anticipated return to the ice on the opening day of the team’s training camp, marking a major milestone in his recovery from two major surgeries. According to an official report by NHL.com, Engvall participated in his first full practice on September 19, 2026, after missing the entire 2025-26 NHL season due to severe hip and ankle injuries.

Engvall’s road to recovery was long and physically demanding. Following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, the Swedish forward underwent hip surgery during the summer of 2025, followed by ankle surgery in the fall of 2025 to address a lingering issue. The ankle procedure was particularly critical for Engvall, whose primary asset on the ice is his skating speed. While he wanted to return as quickly as possible, he emphasized the necessity of being patient and listening to his body during the rehabilitation process.

Reflecting on his return, Engvall expressed his excitement about being back with his teammates. He noted that while rehabilitating for an entire year was frustrating, especially while watching others play, he understood the importance of patience. He emphasized that his primary focus was listening to his body and ensuring he reached 100% health before returning, so he could fully contribute to the team’s efforts in the upcoming season.

Prior to his year-long absence, Engvall was a key depth player for the Islanders. During the 2024-25 season, he recorded 15 points (8 goals and 7 assists) in 62 games. Over his three seasons with New York, he has accumulated 52 points (23 goals and 29 assists) in 154 games. His return provides the Islanders with much-needed size and speed on the wings as they prepare for the grueling 2026-27 NHL regular season.

The team’s coaching staff and management will closely monitor Engvall’s progress during training camp to evaluate his conditioning and speed. While he is cleared for practice, transitioning back into high-intensity game situations will be the next critical test. For the Islanders, a healthy Engvall offers a versatile option in their middle-six forward group, adding depth that was sorely missed during the previous campaign.
