The Television Academy announced the nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Wednesday, with the medical drama The Pitt and the comedy Hacks leading the field. The Pitt secured 25 nominations, while the final season of Hacks earned a record-setting 24 nods, positioning HBO Max at the forefront of the competition with 122 total nominations.
A notable highlight of this year’s list is the strong reception of new Apple TV projects. Pluribus, the latest drama from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan, earned 18 nominations. Among these is a nomination for Best Actress in a Drama for Rhea Seehorn, who is widely considered the favorite to win. The success of Pluribus marks a significant transition for the creative team behind Better Call Saul, solidifying their continued influence in prestige television.
Other Apple TV productions also fared well, with Widow’s Bay receiving 19 nominations, including a Best Actor nod for Matthew Rhys. Meanwhile, Shrinking saw Harrison Ford nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy, adding to the anticipation surrounding the legendary actor’s potential first EGOT-tier win.
Traditional broadcast networks maintained a presence, largely driven by ABC’s Abbott Elementary, which collected seven nominations. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to air on NBC on September 14, hosted by Mariska Hargitay.
