Raytheon, an RTX business, has been awarded a $333 million contract by the U.S. Navy for the production of Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) Block IA missiles. This cutting-edge missile system combines offensive and defensive capabilities, supporting anti-air, anti-surface warfare, and sea-based terminal ballistic missile defense within a single, versatile solution.
SM-6 has consistently demonstrated its operational effectiveness, earning its reputation as a critical component of the U.S. Navy’s arsenal. In March 2024, during the Flight Test Aegis Weapon System (FTM-32) exercise, the missile successfully intercepted a medium-range ballistic missile target, showcasing its reliability and advanced technological maturity. Its deployment spans various platforms, including traditional Navy ships, unmanned vessels, and land-based launchers, highlighting its adaptability and future-proof design.
Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon, emphasized the significance of the contract:
“SM-6 has a proven performance, and this contract is an important step for providing this urgently needed weapon to our armed forces. Raytheon continues to work closely with our customers to ensure our military has an unfair advantage at sea and to keep our adversaries guessing.”
The missile’s multi-purpose capability reduces costs for military operations while enhancing operational efficiency. As a “Swiss Army knife” of missile systems, it allows navies to streamline their armament without compromising defense capacity, ensuring better space utilization and cost-effectiveness.
Production of the SM-6 Block IA missiles will take place across Raytheon’s facilities in Tucson, Arizona; Huntsville, Alabama; Andover, Massachusetts; and Dine, New Mexico, with completion expected by 2027. This timeline aligns with the U.S. Navy’s modernization efforts and growing demand for integrated air and missile defense systems.
The strategic importance of the SM-6 system extends beyond its immediate financial implications. As tensions rise in key maritime regions, its ability to address multi-domain threats positions the U.S. Navy to maintain a technological edge and robust defense posture.
Raytheon, a leading defense contractor under RTX, continues to push the boundaries of military technology. With more than 100 years of innovation in advanced sensors, missile systems, and integrated defense solutions, Raytheon remains a trusted partner in safeguarding national security.
