Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is reportedly nearing a move to the Saudi Pro League, a transfer that would conclude his four-month stint as a free agent. According to FootballInNigeria.com.ng and reporting via Soccer Laduma, negotiations are at an advanced stage, with a deal potentially finalized before the end of the week.
Nwabali has been without a club since February, when he mutually terminated his contract with South African side Chippa United. The timing of his departure, which occurred after most major transfer windows had closed, left the 30-year-old unable to sign with a new team until the summer registration period opened in June. The lack of competitive football significantly impacted his status with the Nigerian national team, where he had previously been the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.
During his absence, head coach Eric Chelle has integrated other options into the squad, including Francis Uzoho and Udinese’s Maduka Okoye. While Nwabali’s return to the national setup remains dependent on his form, securing a club in the Saudi Pro League would provide the consistent competitive minutes required to challenge for his place ahead of the September AFCON 2027 qualifiers.
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong noted the challenges Nwabali faced during his time as a free agent, highlighting the professional risks associated with mid-season contract terminations. As the Saudi Pro League continues its significant investment in international talent, Nwabali’s transition is expected to provide him with the platform needed to return to the professional fold.
