Public Skepticism and Criticism: Intentional Government Policy for Control?

A critical perspective exists within the public sphere, suggesting that the government’s repeated extensions of social support are a deliberate tactic to keep families of missing soldiers dependent and prevent potential protests. Commentary points to the government using this time for other purposes, while the cases of many missing soldiers remain unresolved. This viewpoint, while critical, reflects the concerns and distrust of a segment of society regarding the government’s actions.

New Social Assistance Package for Families of the Missing: Details of the Decision

The government of the Republic of Armenia has initiated a significant change by extending the duration of social support provided to families of servicemen missing in action from the 2020 war. According to the new decision, the support will be in effect until February 2025, inclusive.

Continued Financial Assistance: Amount Provided to Families

Under the existing regulations, since a government resolution adopted in December 2020, families of missing servicemen have been receiving 300,000 drams monthly. Initially, this support was intended to last until December 2024. The new amendment ensures the continuation of these payments for an additional two months, up to February 2025.

Rationale Behind the Extension: Government’s Justification

The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has been tasked with presenting a proposal regarding the further financing of this process, indicating the importance the government places on this issue. The primary reason for the extension is the existence of 22 families who are yet to receive a court decision recognizing their relatives as missing in action. Without this legal status, their payments would have ceased starting February 1, 2025.

Financial Costs and Sources: Funding for the Extension

The additional funding required for extending the support through February 2025 will amount to 6.6 million drams. This sum is planned to be allocated from the budgetary funds already assigned to the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, ensuring no extra burden on the state budget.

Social Significance and Purpose: Addressing the Needs of Affected Families

The main goal of this government initiative is to alleviate the social hardships faced by families affected by the 2020 war. Extending the support will provide stability for these vulnerable families, allowing them to continue receiving necessary assistance during this challenging period. The government reaffirms its commitment to the social protection of servicemen and their families.
