Tragedy on the A-7
Three Irish nationals have been confirmed dead following a devastating car crash near Malaga in southern Spain. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 28, 2026, has left the community of Mullingar, Co Westmeath, in mourning.
The victims have been identified as Mark McCullagh, his partner Michaela Newcombe, and Amy McCullagh. According to local police reports, the group was travelling in a rented Mercedes on the A-7 motorway when the vehicle collided with another car near the Cerrado de Calderon exit. The impact caused the car to break through a safety barrier and plunge approximately 100 feet down an embankment.
Investigation and Response
Spanish Civil Guard authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. While officials stated it is too early to determine the exact cause, technical data retrieved from the vehicle’s onboard computer systems will be used to analyze speed and dynamics at the time of the collision. A 31-year-old Irish man, identified as Ian McCullagh, survived the crash and remains in serious condition at Carlos Haya Hospital.
Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee, confirmed that consular teams are on the ground providing support to the affected families. “This is an absolutely devastating accident for all of the families involved,” McEntee said. Local representatives, including TD Robert Troy, have expressed the profound shock felt by the Westmeath community, noting that the group had only arrived in Spain for their holiday days before the tragedy.
