Details of the Alleged Assault and Legal Proceedings
The incident occurred around 5:30 AM on Saturday, December 27, outside a licensed premises at the corner of James Street and Mountain Terrace in Perth’s Northbridge entertainment district. Police received reports of a disturbance, and Mr. Picton was found unresponsive. He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remained in an induced coma for over three weeks, undergoing surgery for a severe brain bleed and a fractured skull before his death.
The alleged attacker, Brodie Jake Dewar, 20, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm. Following Mr. Picton’s death, police are expected to upgrade this charge. During an earlier court hearing, CCTV footage of the incident was presented, showing Mr. Picton calmly speaking with a man, allegedly Dewar, before Dewar suddenly struck him in the face. Dewar’s lawyer claimed that Mr. Picton was making unwanted advances on his cousin, and Dewar acted instinctively, believing Mr. Picton was about to attack him.
