A recent investigation by The Telegraph has exposed a sophisticated network of counterfeit currency circulating in Britain, with illicit cash primarily originating from China and distributed through mainstream social media platforms. Dealers are reportedly using platforms such as TikTok and Instagram to advertise counterfeit currency, often offering bulk discounts to attract buyers. Once contact is established on these platforms, transactions are moved to encrypted messaging services, where buyers are required to complete payments using cryptocurrency, further complicating law enforcement efforts to track the illicit proceeds.

One dealer, identified in the report as “Pete,” claimed to have generated over £100,000 annually through these networks. He noted that his Telegram group alone consists of more than 16,000 members. These sellers assert that their counterfeit notes are of sufficient quality to be accepted at major UK retailers and hospitality chains, including Wetherspoons and Selfridges, posing a direct threat to retail loss prevention and consumer economic security.
