Armenia Bans Export of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals for Six Months

The Armenian government, during its session on December 5, decided to impose a six-month ban on the export of ferrous and non-ferrous metals to third countries. The decision includes semi-finished products made of iron and non-alloy steel, copper, aluminum, and other metals, which will now be restricted from export.

According to the rationale behind the decision, the ban aims to promote the production of goods with higher added value from raw materials. Previous bans on scrap metal exports have already contributed to the development of the local processing industry. The new restrictions are expected to foster the production of high-value products such as construction rebar, profiles, cables, and wires—items in high demand in Armenia’s domestic market.

Exporting these metals will now require licensing. Exporters must obtain a license specifying the quantity of goods to be exported. Exports can then be carried out in batches, adhering to the limits set by the license.

The decision is temporary and will remain in effect for six months, aligning with the maximum term allowed by the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) restrictions.
