Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov’s recent statement demanding that Armenia withdraw its legal cases against Baku in international courts highlights a troubling pattern. This is not a genuine effort toward peace but yet another attempt at blackmail aimed at undermining Armenia’s sovereignty and dignity. Rather than seeking resolution through lawful and diplomatic means, Azerbaijan continues its strategy of applying pressure and manipulating international players to enforce its agenda.
This demand reveals Azerbaijan’s desire to eliminate any legal obstacles that challenge its actions. Armenia’s cases in international courts are rooted in principles of justice and international law, intended to address violations and restore fairness. For Baku to insist on abandoning these claims is a clear attempt to erode Armenia’s rights, constitutional integrity, and national values.
Instead of adhering to the norms of international law, Azerbaijan opts for threats, political pressure, and intimidation. This approach only fuels regional tension and diminishes the chances for genuine peace. By demanding that Armenia give up its pursuit of justice, Azerbaijan undermines the very foundations of lawful conflict resolution.
Armenia’s commitment to defending its rights through international legal avenues is both legitimate and necessary. Any state that surrenders its pursuit of justice under pressure risks compromising its sovereignty and independence. International partners must recognize the dangerous nature of Azerbaijan’s demands and support the rule of law and the pursuit of justice.
Armenia must not and cannot yield to Baku’s blackmail. The legal battle in international courts is not an extension of conflict but a path toward restoring justice and achieving lasting peace. Azerbaijan must understand that true peace is built on justice, mutual respect, and the rule of law—not through threats and coercion.
