Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, addressed the press ahead of the team’s decisive Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund. With the Blaugrana aiming to secure a spot in the top 8 and qualify for the last 16, Pena emphasized the importance of rediscovering their dominant form.
Reflecting on last season, Pena acknowledged its challenges but focused on his personal growth. “Last year was tough for the group, and when I played, it was during a decisive part of the season. But I’m in a good place now, and I think it shows,” he remarked.
The goalkeeper credited his mental resilience and consistency as key factors in his performance. “Mentally, I’m the same. Continuity builds confidence. The positive results I had early on helped both the team and me personally. I’ve always expressed gratitude to the coach for his trust, both publicly and privately,” he said, highlighting the support from Xavi Hernandez.
Pena is fully aware of the challenge ahead. “When you’re young, you dream of playing in matches like this. Dortmund’s stadium, the crowd—it’s an intense atmosphere. They’ve scored 27 goals in 8 games, so we’ll need to give 100%,” he noted.
Acknowledging the highs and lows every team faces, Pena reflected on Barcelona’s September form. “September was spectacular, the result of all the work we’ve been doing since the coach joined. We’ve shown what we can achieve, and now we know what needs to be done,” he added.
The recipe for success, Pena believes, is simple yet demanding: “We have to get back to what made us unstoppable. Be decisive in the penalty area and strong at the back. The coach knows what he has to do, and so do we.”
Pena also stressed the importance of prioritizing the team over individual recognition. “I don’t step on the pitch to showcase myself. My job is to help the team with my performance. At Barcelona, you’re expected to deliver 100% every two or three days, and that’s what people judge you on,” he concluded.
