According to Azat TV the European Parliament has adopted a resolution demanding Azerbaijan withdraw its troops from sovereign Armenian territory. The resolution passed with 453 votes in favor, 31 against, and 89 abstentions.
The document strongly condemns the Azerbaijani authorities’ repression against opposition members, journalists, and activists. The Council of Europe calls for the immediate release of political prisoners and an end to persecution.
The European Parliament calls on the EU to:
- End dependency on Azerbaijani gas
- Suspend the 2022 energy cooperation memorandum
- Freeze military equipment exports to Azerbaijan
The MPs called on Azerbaijan to fully implement all orders of the International Court of Justice, including the November 17, 2023 order, which specifies measures for the safe, unhindered, and rapid return of people forcibly displaced from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). The MPs also demanded to refrain from destroying Armenian cultural, religious, and historical heritage in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and to protect it.
The resolution states that any military action against Armenia will have serious consequences for EU-Azerbaijan relations.
