A New Top Spot
The American Film Institute (AFI) has officially revised its “100 Years… 100 Laughs” list, crowning Mel Brooks’ 1974 satirical western Blazing Saddles as the funniest American film of all time. The announcement coincided with the legendary filmmaker’s 100th birthday on June 28, 2026.
Originally unveiled in 2000, the list previously held Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot at the top. However, citing Brooks’ long-standing contention that his own work was superior, AFI leadership decided to adjust the rankings to honor his centennial. “He’s right! We’re happy to right this wrong as Mel celebrates his centennial,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO.
A Legacy of Comedy
Blazing Saddles, which features iconic performances by Cleavon Little and the late Gene Wilder, remains a landmark in American cinema. The film’s elevation to the number one spot highlights Brooks’ enduring influence on the genre. He now holds three positions in the top 15, with The Producers (11th) and Young Frankenstein (13th) also recognized.
Brooks, who is one of the few EGOT winners in history, shows no signs of slowing down. He is currently involved in the production of Spaceballs: The New One, a sequel to his 1987 classic, which is slated for release in April 2027. His career, spanning from his early days writing for Sid Caesar to his reinvention of movie comedy, continues to be celebrated as a cornerstone of Hollywood history.
