Top-seeded Alexander Zverev secured his 60th tour-level victory of the 2026 season on Sunday, overcoming a resilient challenge from Frenchman Quentin Halys with a 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3 win at the Rolex Shanghai Masters. The World No. 2 became the first player on the ATP Tour to reach the 60-win milestone this year, marking the third time in his career he has achieved the feat following 60 wins in 2018 and a career-best 69 victories in 2024.

A Tight Battle and Milestone Context

Playing inside the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Zverev spent two hours and 17 minutes on court to subdue his 48th-ranked opponent. Despite controlling much of the baseline exchanges, the German let slip two match points in a tense second-set tiebreak before Halys leveled the match. Zverev responded decisively in the decider, breaking early to race to a 3-0 lead and closing out the contest without ever facing a break point on his own serve throughout the entire encounter, as reported by IANS.

“I feel like this year I’ve been picking my places where I want to peak, and I feel like I did that quite well,” Zverev said, reflecting on a season that includes Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open alongside a runner-up finish at Wimbledon. “I think that 60 wins doesn’t tell the whole story, but I’m happy with how I’ve peaked at the right moments.”

Head-to-Head History and Halys’s Serve

Sunday’s third-round clash was the fourth meeting between Zverev and Halys in 2026 alone, following prior encounters at Miami, Roland Garros, and a five-set duel at the US Open. Zverev leads their head-to-head series 4-0, though none of the matches have come easily. The German offered high praise for his opponent’s unconventional service game after the match, noting that Halys’s variable ball toss and powerful first-strike tennis make him exceptionally difficult to read on hard courts.

“I think for his height, he’s probably the best server in men’s tennis right now,” Zverev observed, pointing to the Frenchman’s ability to disguise direction while maintaining pinpoint accuracy. “His first forehand after the serve is also unbelievable, so credit to him for playing amazing tennis and rising up the rankings.”

Chasing the Year-End No. 1 Ranking

With the victory, Zverev advances to the fourth round, where he will face 19th seed Alexander Bublik. Bublik booked his spot in the round of 16 following a dramatic 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Brandon Nakashima that featured a notable second-set racket-smashing meltdown from the Kazakh player.

Beyond chasing his first career title in Shanghai—where his previous best result was a runner-up finish in 2019—Zverev is positioned to claim the year-end World No. 1 ranking. With Jannik Sinner having ended his season early due to a knee injury, Zverev can mathematically secure the ATP Year-End No. 1 honors presented by PIF if he reaches the semi-finals in Shanghai.
