Quick Read

  • Alexander Zverev secured the world No. 1 ranking on October 29, 2026, following a Vienna Open win.
  • He is only the second German man after Boris Becker to reach the top ranking.
  • Zverev won his first two Grand Slam titles in 2026 at the French and US Opens.

Alexander Zverev is set to become the new world No. 1 in men’s tennis, capturing the top spot on October 29, 2026, after defeating Tallon Griekspoor to reach the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. DW reported that the 29-year-old German becomes only the second German man, following Boris Becker 35 years ago, to achieve the ranking. Zverev also secured the ATP Year-End No. 1 honor for the 2026 season, as See.News noted, replacing Italy’s Jannik Sinner after Sinner ended his season prematurely due to injury.

A Breakthrough Year Defined by Grand Slam Titles

Zverev’s rise to the top of the PIF ATP Rankings follows a breakthrough season in which he claimed his first two career Grand Slam titles at the French Open and the US Open. SuperSport reported that Zverev became the 30th man to hold the No. 1 spot since rankings began in 1973, making him the second-oldest first-time No. 1 player behind Australia’s John Newcombe, who was 30 when he reached the summit in 1974.

Reflecting on the milestone, Zverev told reporters that reaching the top position carries a unique significance compared to winning individual tournament titles. “It is different than winning a tournament or a title, but it’s such a special feeling to know that the No. 1 is going to be next to your name when the new rankings come out,” he said.

Overcoming Long-Term Injuries and Career Challenges

The German player’s path to the top has included significant hurdles, including a career-threatening ankle ligament tear during his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal in 2022. Zverev also manages diabetes and dealt with high-profile personal controversies, including domestic violence allegations from two former partners that he has denied. A legal case involving former partner Brenda Patea concluded with a court settlement in June 2024.

Despite these disruptions, Zverev maintained consistent form across the sport’s major events, finishing the major tournament circuit with a 25-2 record across the four Grand Slams in 2026. His consistency included reaching the final or semi-final stages across multiple premier tournaments, cementing his place at the summit of men’s professional tennis.
