Contract Negotiations Stall
The New York Islanders are facing the prospect of losing their long-time captain, Anders Lee, as the veteran forward appears increasingly likely to test the unrestricted free agent market on July 1. According to reports from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, a recent meeting between Lee’s agent, Neil Sheehy, and Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche did not produce a breakthrough, with both sides reportedly remaining “far apart” on the terms of a potential extension.
Financial Constraints and Future Outlook
While the organization has expressed a clear desire to retain their captain, the team is currently managing significant salary cap constraints. General Manager Mathieu Darche is reportedly working to clear additional cap space, which has complicated the immediate negotiation process. The Islanders currently hold approximately $10.684 million in available space, but the financial parameters required to keep the 35-year-old forward have yet to align with the team’s internal projections.
A Franchise Legacy
Lee, a sixth-round pick in the 2009 NHL Draft, has spent his entire 14-season career with the Islanders, serving as team captain since 2018. His reliability remains a hallmark of his tenure, having played 82 games in three of the last four seasons. During the 2025-26 campaign, Lee recorded 19 goals and 23 assists. As he approaches his 36th birthday in July and stands just 67 games shy of the 1,000-game milestone, his potential departure would leave a significant void in both the locker room and the team’s physical presence on the ice.
