Ascension is expanding its specialized healthcare footprint with two significant facility openings this week, aiming to address regional infrastructure gaps in Texas and Wisconsin. The health system launched the Ascension Seton Women’s Hospital in Austin and a new behavioral health unit at St. Francis Hospital in Milwaukee.
Strategic Expansion in Austin
The Ascension Seton Women’s Hospital, a 325,000-square-foot facility, officially opened its doors in Central Austin on Monday. According to Laura Swaney, chief strategy officer of women’s services for Ascension Texas, the facility was designed to keep pace with the city’s rapid growth. The hospital features a dedicated 24/7 women’s emergency department, 26 labor and delivery rooms, and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with capacity for 84 infants.
The hospital is connected to the existing Ascension Seton Medical Center, allowing for streamlined patient transfers. The facility also holds a Level IV maternal care designation, the highest level of care for complex, high-risk pregnancies.
Behavioral Health Investment in Milwaukee
In Wisconsin, Ascension has invested $10 million to open a new behavioral health unit at St. Francis Hospital, scheduled to begin operations on July 1. The unit is designed to serve 61 patients, including both adults and children, specifically those with co-occurring medical and psychiatric needs.
“We are proud to set a new standard for psychiatric care in the communities that we serve,” said Angela Wisniweski of St. Francis Hospital. The facility aims to treat an additional 1,000 patients in its first year, helping to mitigate local shortages in mental health infrastructure.
Financial Context
These capital investments align with Ascension’s broader financial transformation strategy. Saurabh Tripathi, the system’s Chief Financial Officer, was recently recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review for his role in navigating the nonprofit health system through a complex economic environment. Under his leadership, the organization achieved a nearly $2 billion year-over-year improvement in net income for fiscal year 2025, providing the necessary stability for these targeted service expansions.
