The ATP Shanghai Masters has implemented a major structural shift for its 2026 tournament, increasing its court speed by 10 points compared to the previous edition. According to Punto de Break, the tournament’s Court Pace Index (CPI) stands at 42.2 this year, marking the fastest playing surface recorded at the event since 2017.
The modification comes in direct response to widespread player feedback during the 2025 tournament. Competitors previously voiced significant concerns regarding slow court conditions and heavy tennis balls, which led to a sluggish playing field and culminated in an unexpected final between Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Rinderknech. By accelerating the surface, tournament organizers have restored the faster conditions historically associated with Shanghai.
Tactical Adjustments and Player Impact
The notable increase in court speed is expected to alter competitive dynamics significantly. According to reports cited by Punto de Break and analysis from journalist José Morón, the faster surface will directly benefit big servers and athletes specialized in quick conditions. Consequently, players who thrived during the slower 2025 edition will need to adapt their strategies to avoid early exits in the current Masters 1000 event.
