Quick Read

  • Brad Keselowski will leave RFK Racing after the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season.
  • The departure stems from Keselowski's desire to drive for 5+ years versus the team's management transition plan.
  • Ryan Preece will take over the Charter assigned to the No. 6 car for the 2027 season.
  • Keselowski does not yet have a 2027 contract signed but is confident in finding a new opportunity.

Diverging Futures Over Driver Longevity

Brad Keselowski will leave Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing at the conclusion of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season, ending a five-year tenure that revitalized the historic organization. According to Autoweek, the parting of ways stems from a fundamental disagreement over Keselowski’s timeline behind the wheel. While the 42-year-old driver intends to continue competing for five or more years, RFK Racing leadership wanted him to transition into a full-time management and competition director role.

RFK Racing President Chip Bowers explained that both parties spent months trying to align their long-term visions. “One of the things that I heard very early in the process from Brad is that he really has an interest in being a race car driver for the foreseeable future,” Bowers told Autoweek. Bowers added that the organization envisioned a two- to three-year shift toward leadership, but because Keselowski’s horizon extended beyond that, negotiations ultimately stalled.

A Legacy of Revival and Rebuilding

When Keselowski joined the organization in late 2021 as both a minority owner and driver of the No. 6 Ford, Roush Fenway Racing was struggling to find victory lane. Over his tenure, he helped rebuild the team’s competitive infrastructure alongside teammate Chris Buescher and later Ryan Preece, who joined in 2025. Buescher secured five victories during their partnership, while Keselowski added a win at Darlington in 2024, helping position the organization back into championship contention with two cars currently in the playoffs.

Reflecting on his departure, Keselowski acknowledged the emotional weight of leaving an organization he helped reshape. Speaking to Newsday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the 2012 Cup Series champion emphasized that his 19-year career in NASCAR is far from over. “My career’s not over by any means,” Keselowski said. Though he does not yet have a contract signed for 2027, he expressed confidence in finding a new landing spot due to strong early interest from across the garage.

Team Adjustments and Next Steps

With Keselowski’s departure on the horizon, RFK Racing is already restructuring its operations. Bowers confirmed that the Charter assigned to the No. 6 car will be reassigned to Ryan Preece for the 2027 season. The team also plans to maintain its three-car operation, actively seeking a third Charter and a new competition director.

As for his own ownership future, Keselowski indicated he is unlikely to walk away from team ownership entirely. Having gained critical executive experience over the past five years, the veteran racer noted that he plans to remain involved in the sport long after his driving days conclude. For now, however, his immediate priority remains finding a competitive seat to extend his driving career into 2027 and beyond.
