Quick Read
- BHF to close 150 of 640 UK charity shops over two years.
- Closures driven by high operating costs and changing consumer behavior.
- 90 stores to shut by March 2027, with 60 more by March 2028.
- Reductions in central support teams also planned.
- Organization remains financially sound, continuing to fund cardiovascular research.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has announced a significant restructuring of its retail operations, confirming plans to close approximately 150 of its 640 charity shops across the UK over the next two financial years. The organization, which funds critical cardiovascular research, cited an “exceptionally challenging trading environment” and rising operating costs as the primary drivers behind the decision.
According to the BHF, approximately 90 stores are scheduled to cease operations by the end of March 2027, with the remaining 60 closures expected to be completed by March 2028. In addition to the shop closures, the charity is proposing a reduction in the size of the central teams that support its retail network.
Strategic Shift Amid Retail Headwinds
CEO Dr. Charmaine Griffiths emphasized that the move is essential for the long-term sustainability of the charity’s mission. “We must take the difficult step to close some of our shops to sustain retail’s important contribution to funding BHF’s groundbreaking research,” Griffiths stated. The BHF noted that cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death in the UK, accounting for roughly one fatality every three minutes.
The retail sector in the UK has faced a turbulent year, with various commercial entities ranging from fashion retailers to restaurant chains announcing closures due to inflationary pressures and changing consumer habits. The BHF’s decision reflects a broader trend among major charities, such as Cancer Research UK, which has also recently engaged in optimizing its high-street presence in favor of more efficient, potentially larger retail formats.
Operational Future and Support
The charity maintains that its overall financial position remains strong, bolstered by consistent fundraising and legacy income. Despite the reduction in physical locations, the BHF intends to continue operating a national shop network alongside its growing online retail presence, including web and eBay channels.
The BHF has committed to providing support to affected staff through redeployment opportunities, while volunteers will be offered placements at nearby locations. Specific store closures will be announced on the organization’s website once individual staff notifications are complete.
