The remarkable run of Vancouver’s Little Mountain Little League team at the 2026 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, came to an end on Wednesday following a 7-3 loss to Japan. The defeat marked the conclusion of Canada’s most successful tournament performance since 2017, capping a stretch that saw the young team secure three consecutive victories after an initial loss.
Japan established an early lead, pulling ahead 7-0 by the third inning. The momentum shifted significantly when Taiga Yumitori delivered a three-run home run for Japan, striking the top of the right-field wall. Despite the deficit, the Canadian squad attempted a late-game rally. In the fourth inning, Canada put their first run on the board via a steal of home by Connor Ross. Additional offensive contributions in the fifth inning—including an RBI single from Lucas Izen and a fielder’s choice from Jean Ramos—narrowed the gap, but the team was unable to complete the comeback.
A Historic Performance
Entering Wednesday’s match with a 3-1 record, the Little Mountain team had already achieved milestones not seen by a Canadian entry since 1998. After dropping their opening game to South Korea, the team rebounded with victories over Australia, Panama, and a rematch against South Korea. These wins propelled them further into the international bracket than any Canadian team in nearly a decade.

Japan now advances to face Nicaragua’s Ministerio Sobre Las Alas Del Aguila in the next round of the international bracket on Thursday. The tournament, which features separate American and international brackets, will conclude with the championship game on Sunday.
