Quick Read

  • ChatGPT experienced a major global outage on July 25, 2026, impacting users for several hours.
  • The disruption affected login, chat history, and API services for developers.
  • OpenAI confirmed a fix was deployed by midday, restoring full operations.
  • This was the second major outage for the platform within a 72-hour window.

Global Service Interruption

OpenAI has officially restored access to ChatGPT and its associated developer services following a major global outage on Saturday, July 25, 2026. The disruption, which began around 5:00 AM ET (10:00 AM GMT), rendered the platform inaccessible for users across the United States, Europe, India, Japan, Australia, and the UAE. According to outage-tracking platform DownDetector, the incident triggered a surge in reports, with users primarily citing login failures, authentication errors, and an inability to retrieve conversation history.

The outage impacted a broad spectrum of the OpenAI ecosystem, affecting general users, mobile app subscribers, and developers relying on the company’s API platform and Codex coding services. Reports on DownDetector indicated that approximately 78% to 79% of user complaints were tied to core ChatGPT functionality, while smaller percentages were attributed to mobile app glitches and API connectivity issues. In India alone, reports of the disruption exceeded 1,000 within the first few hours of the incident.

Technical Response and Stability

OpenAI acknowledged the technical difficulties early in the morning, updating its official status page to confirm that it was investigating “elevated error rates” affecting its services. By midday, the company announced that it had successfully deployed a mitigation fix and was monitoring the recovery of its systems. While full operations were restored shortly thereafter, the event marks the second significant disruption for the platform within a 72-hour window, following a 24-hour outage that occurred on July 23.

The frequency of these disruptions has drawn attention as OpenAI rapidly expands its service offerings. The company recently launched a high-trust personal finance feature for ChatGPT Pro subscribers, integrated via a partnership with the financial connectivity platform Plaid. This feature allows users to link bank accounts and investment portfolios to generate financial insights. The move into consumer financial services has intensified scrutiny regarding the reliability and security of AI-driven platforms, especially as OpenAI moves to integrate its services with third-party applications like Spotify, Uber, and DoorDash.

Context of Expanding Reliance

The stability of the ChatGPT platform has become a point of concern as user dependency grows. With the service recently reaching the milestone of 1 billion monthly active users, according to Sensor Tower, the impact of such outages is increasingly widespread. Analysts point out that as ChatGPT transitions from a simple chatbot to an integrated digital assistant, the requirements for uptime and system reliability are becoming comparable to essential financial and communication infrastructure.

While OpenAI has introduced enhanced security protections and authentication tools, the recurrence of system-wide outages suggests that the company’s backend infrastructure is under significant strain. As the platform prepares for further expansion into sensitive areas like personal finance and automated task execution, the need for redundant systems and improved uptime remains a critical challenge for the organization.
